Beginner’s Guide to Website IP’s

Websites are the easiest way to sell your products and offerings. It matters how you design your website and how critical you are about maintaining it. If you have a basic understanding of websites, but wondering what website IP’s are, here’s an easy guide to help you have a complete grasp over it:

What is an IP address?

Just like you use a phone number to talk to a friend, IP addresses help computers to locate and communicate with each other across networks. Although we use addresses such as www.example.com to go to a website, however, computersconvert them into numerical addresses while sending data to the targeted location.

So, when you visit a website, do a video conference or send an email, your computer directs data packets to IP address of the connection at the other end and obtains packets to its own IP address.

What is the need of IP addresses?

Next we come to the need of IP addresses.  As already explained that IP addresses are numbers that enable our computers to communicate with each other. So, without these IP addresses, one had to copy data from device to device manually utilizing CDs, hard disks, flash storage or DVDs. Our device would have been unable to send data without human intervention.

In absence of IP addresses assigned to our computers, we would have been sending paper letters and memos rather than sending emails. There would have been no existence of streaming video sites. Rather, we would be sending each other discs and tapes. There would have been no existence of online stores and we would have to visit physical stores for shopping.

What is the difference between private IP & a unique IP address?

Private addresses are actually those addresses that people use on private networks. For instance, many home and office networks use private addresses. At a protocol level, there is not any difference between the two addresses. Nonetheless, they differ organizationally as private addresses can be used within a single administration only rather than on the wider internet.

Private addresses are set aside for use by any user without any global coordination. Identifying a private address is easy. Private addresses begin with 10., 172.16., 192.168.

These addresses are used in a lot of plug’n’play networking equipment such as those that are sold to residential internet users.

Unique addresses are distinct only in that a set of registries manage their distribution.  As the registries manage distribution of other addresses, there is a likelihood to find out whom is assigned the address and how to contact them. Such addresses enable data to be routed across the whole internet.

If a private address is assigned to your computer, but you can access services over the internet then probably your computer is behind a Network Address Translator (NAT).

Do I use one or more IP addresses?

In a typical scenario, a residential connection is assigned a unique address and makes use of a block of private addresses for numbering each computer, video game console, smartphone or a printer connected to it. Then again this address is assigned to connection that you use, the services and peers that you communicate with over the internet also have addresses.

Nearly 3.7 billion addresses are available for ordinary internet connections according to an estimate. If your computer connects to the internet via cable as well as through home network, then you have two distinct IP addresses for each connection.
