Make a Website for Free
Many people have websites now. You could do it for fun or you could need it for business purposes. But making a website could seem like a daunting task for a beginner. You could face many questions and concerns, or be stumped by the unfamiliar technology and the much-hyped internet. Below are some easy steps to guide you and help you make a website for free.
Step 1: Choose Your Platform
The first order of business is to decide which platform you will be using to make your website. “Platform” is a content management system (website building platform) that is user-friendly, and not only helps youto create your own website but also handle your online content.WordPress, Joomla and Drupal are some of the most popular website building platforms of 2016.
Almost half of the websites on the Internet use WordPress as their platforms, because it is a very beginner-friendly, free platform that can handle either a big business site or a basic blog. You do not even need to hire a web developer as it works on any of your electronic devices that have an Internet connection.
Step 2: Domain Name and Host
To get your website online you need:
- A domain name (this will be your web address for example: yoursitename.com)
- Hosting(a service that will connect your website to the Internet)
It looks professional to have your own domain name, plus having your own hosting will make sure your website has no problems in loading quickly.
If you are creating a website for business purposes then your domain name should be the same as your company’s. But if the website is for your personal use, then you could choose the domain name as your name. You could choose the extensions as .com, .net or .org.
A few things to keep in mind when deciding on your domain name, is that it should be memorable, brandable and catchy. You want a domain name that is not easy to forget and rolls easily off the tongue.
Step 3: Setting Up the Website
Now that you have gotten your domain name and set up your hosting, it is time to get your website up and running.
First, you need to install WordPress, or whichever platform you have chosen.
Every reliable and well-established hosting company almost always has a 1-click-installation option that makes getting your site up easy. But if they somehow do not have this option, you could always install it manually.
In WordPress, you can access free themes to apply to your web page. Choosing a theme that goes along with your site is important as it represents what you want your website to represent. After installing your chosen theme, you can start adding content.
You can add an ‘About Me’ page that describes what the company or the person that the website is representing. You can even add titles and taglines to your pages.
You can add lots more to your web page if you want, but after making these basic tweaks and setups, your website is ready to go.
